Why Are They Called Ductless Mini Splits? A wall-mount mini-split heating and air conditioning unit installed in a new house. A modern heat pump, this unit heats a house in winter and cools in the summer. This type of system eliminates ductwork which is a primary source of inefficiency in a conventional system making this about 30% more efficient. This particular unit has an eye sensor which pans the room looking for hot or cold spots and directs the airflow accordingly.

They’re called ductless mini splits because they don’t require ductwork and consist of two main components—a compact indoor air handler and an outdoor compressor—connected by refrigerant lines. This “split” design allows for efficient, targeted heating and cooling in specific areas.
